Frequently Asked Questions
How can I figure out how much gravel, sand or soil I need for my project?
You can use these helpful formulas below:
Squares & Rectangles
How many square feet does a ton of stone cover?
Most stones cover around 35 s.f./ton.
What is the standard thickness of machine cut stone?
Around the 4” mark.
How wide does the stone pocket (stone ledge and cornice) need to be?
6” in most cases.
How many square feet does a 2” flagstone cover per ton?
Around 70-80 square feet.
How do you sell your stone?
By the ton.
How does the installed cost of stone compare to the installed cost of brick?
Stone, fully installed including labor, is generally 2X the fully installed cost of brick.
Does it cost more to install stone dry stacked?
Yes, primarily because it requires more labor than if a normal mortar joint was used.
How does dry stacked stone remain in place?
When installed in a wall, dry stacked stone uses a substantial amount of mortar that is raked back.
How much more stone is required to dry stack?
Approximately 15% more than if a normal mortar joint was used.
Can natural stone be made into a thin veneer?
Yes, the quarry saws the face off of the building stone to make the thin veneer.
Is thin veneer stone installed less expensive than full stone installed?
No, because stone is so abundant in Oklahoma the cost of laying full stone is usually cheaper than thin veneer installed.
What applications are most common for thin veneer?
Applications where weight or space is an issue. Frequently, remodels use thin veneer.
How thick is thin veneer?
1” to 1 ½” thick is normal.
How do I find a stone mason?
Usually, your builder will have a stone mason he likes to use. If not, we have a list of independent stone masons we can give you.
Where do you get your stone?
Primarily, from quarries in Oklahoma and the three surrounding states.
You can use these helpful formulas below:
Squares & Rectangles
- Area: Length X Width. Example: Length = 6′, Width = 4′. 6′ x 4′ = 24 sq.ft.
- Depth: Inches Deep/12 = Decimal Depth. Example: Depth = 3″/12 = .25
- Cubic Feet: Area X Decimal Depth = Cu. Ft. Example: 24 sq.ft. x .25 = 6 cu.ft.
- Tons Needed: Weight per Cubic Foot X Cubic Feet needed. Example: Product =100 lbs. per cubic foot. 6 cubic feet needed.
- 100 x 6 = 600 lbs./2000 = .3 Tons
- Yards Needed: Cubic Feet/27. Example: 6 cu.ft./27 = .22 cu.yds. or ¼ cu.yd.
- Area: Diameter X .7854 = sq.ft. Example: Diameter =12′ x 12′ x .7854 = 113.1 sq.ft.
- Circumference: Diameter X 3.1416. Example: Diameter = 12′ x 3.1416 = 37.7 Linear Feet. Note: Circumference is the running feet around the border of a circle.
- A ton of most loose stone products covers roughly 80 sq.ft., 3″ deep.
- A yard always covers 108 sq.ft., 3″ deep.
- Always figure compaction for areas over 6″ deep. Compaction for sand and soil is about 15 to 20%. On most products a ton is equal to 75% of a cubic yard.
- For any other shapes you can fax, e-mail, or mail a rough drawing to our office.
